It's Been Awhile! We Missed You. Have an Episode.
We heard that absence makes the heart grow fonder...
Turns out, we just can’t help ourselves.
Spring 2024 was a unexpectedly chaotic and eventful time! But with the semester behind your intrepid hosts, Joost and Laine have been able to put their heads together for a new, fresh summer season. Here’s episode one for season five! We’re really happy about it, and we hope you will be too.
After a very long recap of our lives (truly, we haven’t seen each other either!), Laine and Joost turn to the top four stories they wish they been able to discuss on pod. As usual, Joost is all dollars, cents, and data points, wanting to talk about Sony’s funky new CEO duo and Disney’s big money investment in Epic Games. And Laine brings culture and history to the fore, giving listeners a front row seat on their experiences of GDC 2024, as well as the U.S. Copyright Office video game hearings that let them play David-vs-Goliath against the ESA. As usual, it’s their expert perspectives that produce UNBOXING’s unique blend of coverage and critique.
Stick around for Joost laughing about the latest Gamestop stock price buffoonery, and Laine’s hot takes on Chaim Gingold’s new book Building SimCity, which they’ve declared “the first great book of video game history.”
(If you wanna learn more about Building SimCity, Laine’s journal ROMchip: A Journal of Game Histories will be hosting Gingold and Will Wright (yes, that Will Wright) in a live conversation on Twitch Friday, July 19. Tix here.)
